Green ICT and flawed science

Scientists dealt a blow to their climate change crusade with a lack of rigour in designing proof for their hypothesis. The controversy was similar I thought to the wide credibility gaps that exist between ICT as an industry and its claims of ROI or benefit to its purchasers. This is especially apparent in the attitude of a lot of end users towards the claims made on behalf of energy saving hardware or software – One operations manager memorably telling me that most of the 'solutions' he sees demonstrated seem "a bit too James Bond"

Just as climate researchers need to restore public confidence in their work by being more open to criticism, defining clear results and the basis of any claims so to do the ICT vendors who aim to profit from the need for a low carbon economy and need to be careful to avoid making inaccurate and misleading claims about 'technology' that play into the hands of the growing number of climate change sceptics. Also, there seems to be a need to acknowledge in ICT that green ICT is not just energy efficiency but also a project that supports an organisation in how it is seen to conduct itself and its motives, integrity and other concepts like that.
