Power Management Software Versus Employee Awareness

Third-party power management tools often require installation of an additional agent on the PC, which increases IT overhead, in return for helping to measure and reduce the energy consumed in the office environment.

To evaluate the potential energy savings offered by third-party power management tools, Intel conducted two studies: one with enforced energy management and soft [...]

Reducing Energy Use at Intel

Intel architect Doug DeVetter and 'IT Technology Evangelist' Michael Bretton have published a piece of internal research made to guide their own sustainability efforts.

The findings recommended these actions for Intel.

• Proactively replace older, less efficient equipment with higher-efficiency models.

• Deploy new power schemes to existing and new PCs.

• Enable power setting reporting.

Power Management Software Versus Employee Awareness Part 2

Raising user awareness of energy use and cost can be more effective at reducing energy consumption than third-party power management software.

The second part of Intels approach to reducing PC energy consumption in offices involved empowering  employees and changing behaviors. Studies showed that raising employees’ awareness of how much power their equipment is consuming, and getting [...]

Why Sustainable Information Technology?

There seems to be a tidal wave of C2B and B2B consumer pressure for environmental and energy responsibility. The European Union Code of Conduct, The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE), BSi PAS 2050, Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT), Ecma International, Kyoto Protocol are all examples of government response to this pressure and [...]
